Bakhtiyari Antique Carpet – Garden Design
This magnificent Bakhtiyari antique carpet exemplifies the artistry and symbolism of tribal Persian weaving from the late 19th to early 20th century. Woven by the Bakhtiyari nomads of western Iran, it features the renowned “Garden” (Khesti) design — a layout divided into rectangular panels resembling an enclosed Persian garden, or chahar bagh, symbolizing paradise and harmony.
Each compartment depicts a distinct motif: blossoming trees, floral sprays, cypress and willow trees, birds, and water channels, all rendered in a vibrant yet balanced palette of deep indigo, madder red, ivory, and soft saffron tones. The weaver’s masterful use of natural vegetable dyes lends the carpet a warm patina and remarkable depth of color.
The structure is robust, with handspun wool pile on a cotton foundation, showcasing the Bakhtiyari tribe’s characteristic durability and dense knotting technique. The border, framed with a classic herati or meandering vine pattern, completes the composition with rhythmic elegance.
